KazNARU Hosts English-Language Educational Event “Abai’s Concept of the Integral Person: Language, Knowledge and Self-Development”
On September 22, 2026, as part of Languages Week under the theme “Language is the Heart of the People and the Pillar of the Nation,” an English-language educational event entitled “Abai’s Concept of the Integral Person: Language, Knowledge and Self-Development” was held.
The main purpose of the event was to introduce students to the philosophical concept of the “Integral Person” (Tolyk Adam) developed by the great Kazakh thinker, poet, and educator Abai Kunanbaiuly, and to relate his ideas to the values and worldview of today’s younger generation. The event also aimed to promote the importance of education, self-development, critical thinking, and lifelong learning while enhancing students’ English-language communication skills.The event was attended by Bauyrzhan Zhonkeshev, Head of the Department of Languages, foreign language instructors, and Maliha Chowdhurry, an English Language Teaching Assistant (ELTA) under the Fulbright Program.
The participation of the international instructor provided students with a valuable opportunity to communicate in English in an authentic setting and to engage in intercultural exchange.A central part of the program focused on Abai’s well-known concept of “Mind, Will, and Heart” (Aqyl, Qairat, Zhurek). Participants discussed how these three qualities contribute to the development of an integral and well-rounded individual. Particular attention was given to the importance of knowledge, critical thinking, self-awareness, responsibility, personal growth, and continuous self-improvement.
Students actively participated in the program by presenting creative performances and poetry excerpts in English. Through these activities, they demonstrated their language proficiency, creativity, confidence, and ability to express philosophical ideas in a foreign language.The event also provided a platform for discussing the continuing relevance of Abai’s philosophical heritage in contemporary society. His ideas about education, morality, personal responsibility, and self-development were considered in the context of the challenges and aspirations of today’s youth.
By introducing Abai’s spiritual and intellectual legacy through the English language, the event made a meaningful contribution to the program of Languages Week. It also demonstrated an effective approach to integrating national values, intercultural communication, and foreign language education.The event was organized and conducted by senior lecturers of the Department of Languages Aidana Kashkeeva, Akniyet Serikova and Aigerim Adizhappar.
