Relevance
Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a particularly dangerous and economically significant transboundary infectious disease of farm animals, characterized by high contagiousness, rapid spread, and significant damage to livestock production. Outbreaks of FMD lead to reduced productivity, restrictions on domestic and international trade in livestock products, and require significant expenditures on anti-epidemic measures. The FMD epidemiological situation in Central Asian countries remains unstable due to the active circulation of various typical variants and subtypes of the virus, intensive migration and trade and economic ties, and the proximity of regions with high FMD prevalence. The Republic of Kazakhstan remains under constant threat of FMD virus importation from adjacent territories, requiring high levels of biosecurity and veterinary service readiness. A significant feature of the FMD virus is its pronounced antigenic and genetic variability. As the virus circulates in natural and farm environments, it undergoes constant changes, which can reduce the effectiveness of vaccines that do not match the antigenic structure of circulating field strains. Therefore, the use of vaccines requires regular updating and strict antigenic compliance control of production vaccine strains with current epizootic variants of the virus.
The development of an inactivated and purified foot-and-mouth disease vaccine based on strains circulating in Central Asia is a scientifically and practically oriented task aimed at improving the effectiveness of specific disease prevention. The use of purified antigen components improves the immunogenicity and safety of vaccines, reduces the risk of post-vaccination complications, and ensures the development of strong protective immunity in susceptible animals.
Therefore, the implementation of this project is relevant and timely, as it aims to strengthen epizootic security in the Republic of Kazakhstan, improve the foot-and-mouth disease prevention system, and reduce the risk of the emergence and spread of the disease within the country.
Aim
The foot-and-mouth disease virus has seven types and more than 70 subtypes, which undergo antigenic and genetic changes as they circulate in nature. This complicates the methods of prevention and control of the disease, as the vaccines used require monitoring of the relationship between the typical variant of the virulent virus and the production virus. In this regard, the aim of the project is to develop an inactivated and purified vaccine against the foot-and-mouth disease virus circulating in Central Asia andposing a threat of introduction into the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Expected and Achieved Results
During the project, an inactivated and purified vaccine will be developed against the foot-and-mouth disease virus circulating in Central Asian countries and posing a threat of spreading to the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan. It is expected that the vaccine will be immunogenic and safe, ensuring the formation of protective immunity in susceptible animals.
Information for Potential Users
The project's results will contribute to improving the specific foot-and-mouth disease prevention system, reducing epizootic risks, and strengthening biological and food security in the Republic of Kazakhstan. The scientific and practical data obtained can be used for the further introduction of the vaccine into veterinary practice and the development of domestic biotechnologies for the prevention of particularly dangerous infectious animal diseases.
