REQUIREMENTS FOR WRITING AN ESSAY FOR NON-LANGUAGE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS
Topics for the essay contest for the Day of Gratitude (Алғыс айту күні), which is celebrated on 1 March in Kazakhstan:
Topic related to gratitude
- «Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan – the foundation of unity and harmony of the nation»
Topic related to history and culture
- «Алғыс айту күні – the Day of Remembrance and Unity of the Peoples of Kazakhstan»
Personal development and moral values
- «How to Learn to Express Gratitude: The Art of Seeing the Good»
- General Requirements
The essay should be written with the following aspects in mind:
• Expression of a personal stance on the topic based on a well-argued position.
• Theoretical justification and factual evidence in support of your viewpoint.
• Use of terminology and correct citation of sources (if necessary).
• Analysis of various perspectives using critical thinking.
• Logical and coherent presentation of ideas.
• Application of comparison and generalization methods when analyzing information.
• Proficiency in language (correct spelling, grammar, and stylistic accuracy).
• References to authors when using others' ideas or quotations.
• Compliance with the standards of academic writing (in Kazakh, Russian, or English). - Structure of the Essay
The essay should include three main parts:
• Introduction (1 paragraph):
- brief introduction to the topic.
- Clear statement of the main idea (thesis).
- Justification of the topic's relevance.
• Main Body (2–3 paragraphs):
- Development of the thesis and argumentation.
- Support for the arguments with examples, facts, and references to research.
- Analysis of alternative viewpoints.
• Conclusion (1 paragraph):
- Final conclusions.
- Reinforcement of the main idea of the essay.
- Possible perspectives for further study of the topic. - Formatting
• Length: between 250 and 300 words. - Originality
• Plagiarism is unacceptable. The text must be original. - Pre-submission Check
• Grammar and style: the absence of errors and clarity in expression.
• Structure and logic: a logical connection between paragraphs.
• Argumentation: sufficient depth of analysis.
