On January 27, 2025, Kazakh National Agrarian Research University (KazNARU) launched the official presentation of the course "Sustainable Development and ESG: Strategies for Modern Business" in both offline and online formats.
The course is designed for successful businesses and entrepreneurs who aspire to integrate sustainable development and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance) strategies with socio-corporate responsibility approaches.
Representatives from foreign countries, advanced universities in Kazakhstan, the National Chamber of Entrepreneurs, business communities, and international organizations attended the opening ceremony. Our university's teachers and students also participated in the course.
The event was moderated by KazNARU Vice-Chancellor of International Relations and Strategic Development, Rafis Abazov.
"This organized course covers core concepts of sustainability and ESG, including the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), sustainable agriculture, green energy, business social responsibility, and corporate governance," said Rafis Fanisovich. "Speakers provide comprehensive insights on best practices in environmental management and sustainable business models, as well as the role of ethics and sustainable consumption in today’s business. In addition, the course will provide participants with the knowledge and practical skills to successfully manage sustainable projects and initiatives."
The main objective is to train participants in developing sustainable skills and competencies for implementing ESG strategies in business practice. Special focus was given to developing strategies and tools for monitoring and reporting according to ESG criteria.
During the heated debate, participants such as Samek Vlastimil, Representative of the UN Department of Global Communications in Kazakhstan; White Kendrick, Vice Chancellor for Commercialization of AlmaU; Ibragimov Nariman, Director of the Business Environment Analysis Department of Almaty Business Development Company; Ramu Danudaran, Permanent Supervisor of the World University under the United Nations (online); Vladimir Popov, Director of the QBTU Business Incubator; Erkan Alp Zeinep, Director of Marketing for EFES Kazakhstan; Professor Rodriguez Lucia from Columbia University, USA (online); and Andrew Zimbroff, Professor of Nebraska-Lincoln University (online), shared their opinions and suggestions.
Speakers emphasized that the ESG concept aims to be responsible for the future development of society. This includes:
- Rational use of natural resources
- Reducing the risk of extinction of biological species
- Maintaining gender equality
- Dealing with climate change, poverty, and hunger
The world needs to evolve now in ways that provide a higher standard of living without harming future generations. Business plays a significant role in this direction.
As noted by the speakers, integrating sustainable development principles and ESG into business strategy is essential in the face of global environmental and social challenges. This will help companies meet modern demands and societal expectations, contributing to long-term stability and competitiveness.
At the end of the event, participants of the course "Sustainable Development and ESG: Strategies for Modern Business" thanked KazNARU management for organizing such a crucial and useful meeting.
