On February 15, 2026, the International Conference Model United Nations – New Silk Way 2026 was held at UN Plaza (Almaty). The conference was organized by the Institute of Green and Sustainable Development of the Kazakh National Agrarian Research University (KazNAIU), together with UN agencies and with the support of diplomatic missions. The event's program included a discussion of important issues in environmental sustainability, equality, environmental education, and the green economy and was dedicated to the opening of the UN Regional Hub on Sustainability in Almaty.
The conference brought together representatives from six universities in Kazakhstan and the Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools. Participants acted as state delegates, simulating the work of the UN Security Council (UNSC), the Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and the UN Volunteers (UNV) program. Discussions focused on issues of international security, migration, sustainable development, and the role of volunteerism in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
The participation of representatives of the United Nations and the diplomatic corps added particular significance to the event. Among the distinguished guests were a representative of the UN Department of Global Communications in Kazakhstan, representatives of the UN Volunteers program, the leadership of the Representative Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Almaty, and diplomats from the Consulates General of the United States, Hungary, and Poland. In their speeches, they emphasized the importance of youth diplomacy and the development of a culture of multilateral cooperation.
The event focused on strengthening Kazakhstan's role in international relations, promoting a sustainable agenda, and developing the volunteer movement in the context of the International Year of Volunteers. Participants actively worked on draft resolutions, formulating proposals for strengthening regional and global partnerships.
At the end of the conference, it was noted that Model UN serves as an effective platform for developing leadership competencies, negotiation skills, knowledge exchange, and strategic thinking among young people. The KazNARU Institute of Green and Sustainable Development will continue to expand its collaboration with UN agencies and diplomatic missions, creating new formats for international academic dialogue.
