About the project
Relevance
Infection of foals with Rhodococcus equi is an important disease in horse breeding farms of the world. Virulence plasmids and virulence-related antigens were discovered by Takai et al. in highly virulent isolates from lesions of infected foals in 1991 Since then, studies have been conducted on the mechanism of virulence of plasmids and antigens. However, it is impossible to completely destroy the soil bacterium Rhodococcus equi on endemic farms, as well as it is impossible to control annual outbreaks. The delay in early detection and diagnosis on farms leads to an unfavorable prognosis due to untimely treatment, and the death of foals still occurs every year.
The purpose of the project
To study a new method of preventing infection with Rhodococcus equi in foals. Creation and evaluation of the practicality, effectiveness and safety of an experimental (alternative) model of Rhodococcus equi on goats.
Expected and achieved results
A model of infection of pVAPN-bearing strains in goats will be created, which will probably serve as a model of R. equi infection in foals, since the formation of lesions is very similar to that in foal infections.
One article will be submitted to a peer-reviewed scientific publication included in the Science Citation Index Expanded or Social Science Citation Index in the Web of Science database and (or) having a CiteScore percentile in the Scopus database of at least 35 (thirty-five); an act of introducing a vaccine against R.equi infections, as well as one article in a domestic publication, The Scientific and Practical journal "Gylym zhane bilim" of the West Kazakhstan Agrarian and Technical University named after Zhangir Khan was recommended by the Committee for Quality Assurance in the Field of Education of the Ministry of Education.

Information for potential users
The ultimate goal of our research is to create an effective vaccine against Rhodococcus equi infection in foals. To determine the effectiveness of the vaccine developed in this study, it is absolutely necessary to study the vaccine on an experimental animal model of infection as a first step before using foals. The recently discovered VapN-positive strain of R. equi virulent (pVAPN strain) causes purulent pneumonia in goats, similar to that in foals, and using this goat as an experimental infection model will reproduce the disease in foals. Thus, in order to achieve the goal of this study, a goat infection model will first be considered as a vaccine evaluation system.
