About the project
Relevance
Grafting gourd crops has been practiced successfully in different countries for decades and is becoming increasingly popular all over the world. Grafting is one of the best ways to avoid soil-borne diseases and provide an increase in productivity of up to 40%. The combination of rootstock and grafting influences pH, flavor, sugar, color, carotenoid content, fruit texture, tolerance of low soil temperatures and salinity, nutrient and water uptake. Problems to be solved in the project: reduction of import dependence of farms of the republic on assortment by creating commercial rootstocks, identification of resistance of the created rootstock lines to major soil diseases and stresses with economic evaluation of rootstock combinations, identification of compatibility in rootstock combinations, as well as the effect of rootstock on quality of fruits of rootstock. Scientific researches on creation of rootstocks for pumpkin crops in Kazakhstan are conducted for the first time, and according to the researches carried out in the world related to the investigated theme, there is not enough research on rhizosphere of rootstocks, there is no information on creation and use of tetraploid rootstocks of pumpkin. The scientific groundwork carried out by the research group allows us to set a goal and identify the tasks and methods of their implementation. The practical significance of the research results is the creation of commercial rootstocks, increase of gourds productivity, expansion of breeding works. Applicability of the obtained results will be ensured through the introduction of the best tree stock in practical vegetable production. Potential consumers are farms, greenhouse combines, research institutes and universities of Kazakhstan
The purpose of the project
To form and identify a collection of pumpkin seedlings based on resistance markers and growth-regulating factor, to create on their basis compatible tetraploid seedling lines resistant to diseases and abiotic stresses forming a higher productivity and quality of fruits in the scion
Expected and achieved results
A collection of rootstocks will be formed and 5-7 resistant to fusarium, phytophthora, powdery mildew and cold stress will be identified based on molecular screening. 1-2 tetraploid pumpkin lines with resistance to biotic and abiotic factors will be obtained. Two to three optimum rootstocks will be selected from the separated samples. Evaluation of the separated rootstock-scion combinations with released varieties of cucumber and melon on economically valuable signs under open and protected ground conditions will be carried out. The effect of rootstock potential on growth factors in grafted plants will be studied by assessing the relative gene expression and proteins for phytohormone synthesis (auxin, cytokinin). Biochemical indices of grafting fruits on selected rootstocks will be determined (total sugar, B-group vitamins, vitamin C). Publication of at least 2 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals that have a CiteScore percentile in the Scopus database of at least 35 (thirty-five), and at least 1 (one) article in a peer-reviewed domestic journal recommended by the CQASHE.
6.Other measurable results:
1) Application areaand target consumers of each of the expected results: Based on molecular genetic studies, rootstock-scion combinations can be used for the effective cultivation of vegetable products, rootstock lines for cucumber and melon can be involved in breeding programs, based on rootstock lines can be createda collection of resistant rootstocks of cucumber and melon. The target consumers of the expected results of scientific research are farms and peasant farms, greenhouse complexes, research institutes. A sufficient assortment of rootstocks will be provided for the developing vegetable growing industry of the republic.
2) The impact of the expected results on the development of the main scientific direction and related areas of science and technology: The project implementation will not only reduce the pesticide load, obtain additional and environmentally friendly products, increase the area, but also expand the export potential of gourds. The study of the Cucurbitaceae family will allow researchers to identify promising samples for breeding and further work on obtaining hybrid rootstocks based on tetraploids to commercialize the results of these studies.
3) Applicability and (or) the possibility of commercialization of the obtained scientific results: The innovative and competitive advantages of the project will be ensured through the introduction of the best interspecific rootstock-scion combinations with high productivity and fruit quality in farms and greenhouses, in practical vegetable growing. Further evaluation with the subsequent transfer of the created domestic pumpkin rootstocks to the State Variety Testing of Agricultural Plants and obtaining a patent for a selection achievement will make it possible to commercialize the research results.
4) The socio-economic effect will be the introduction of new domestic rootstocks in the country's vegetable farms. The created of Kazakhstan pumpkin rootstocks will allow solving problems in a short time with increasing productivity, resistance to diseases, mitigating the effects of abiotic stresses, as well as increasing the absorption of nutrients. This will reduce the cost of production, pesticide load and import dependence in the industry.
5) Subsequent assessment of interspecific rootstock-scion combinations for compatibility, productivity will allow their use on crops such as watermelon.
