Kazakhstan Universities Join Forces for Sustainability at National GreenMetric Coordination Meeting

Almaty, 14 July 2025 — Today, leading universities across Kazakhstan united in a pivotal online coordination meeting hosted via Zoom, spearheaded by the national GreenMetric Coordinator. The gathering marks a significant milestone in advancing sustainable development across the nation’s higher education sector.

Representatives from multiple institutions convened to explore strategic alignment within the framework of the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings. The meeting agenda focused on fostering collaboration, sharing best practices, and identifying actionable pathways to elevate Kazakhstan’s environmental performance and educational impact globally.

“By embracing the UN Sustainable Development Goals, KazNARU aims to transform campuses into catalysts of global change—where climate action, education, and innovation are woven into every facet of university life.” — Rafis Abazov, Vice Rector, KazNARU

The session began with a warm welcome and a reaffirmation of shared goals, emphasizing the urgency of integrating sustainability into academic strategies. Universities showcased their current initiatives—including green campus efforts, innovative waste reduction programs, and climate literacy projects—highlighting the diverse progress made across the country.

Participants also discussed joint initiatives, including national data reporting strategies, grant opportunities, and coordinated campaigns such as “Monday Against Plastic.” The momentum built during the meeting reinforced a collective vision: to strengthen Kazakhstan’s voice in global sustainability discourse and create a more resilient academic ecosystem.

“We are witnessing the rise of a united educational front committed to environmental stewardship,” noted the national GreenMetric Coordinator. “Kazakhstan’s universities have the creativity, talent, and institutional will to drive meaningful change.”

To further enrich the impact, participants proposed enhanced inter-university communication channels and regional workshops, ensuring consistent engagement and knowledge exchange. The meeting also emphasized the need to integrate student-led sustainability initiatives and promote interdisciplinary innovation.

The meeting concluded with agreement on key next steps: nominating liaison officers, developing a shared action roadmap, and coordinating follow-up sessions to monitor progress. As sustainability becomes a cornerstone of university leadership, this national alignment sets the stage for innovation, accountability, and impact.
